Under the cover of grey skies, there wasn't much to cheer about in this past weekend's loss to Providence.

The game was played at home on a calm but overcast day. Providence started strong, putting 3 converted tries on the board within the first 10 minutes of the game. At 15 minutes Steve Thompson got St. Michaels first points with a penalty kick from 20 meters, out in front. Providence then went on to score two more tries before half time to finish the first half leading 35 to 3. In the second half Providence scored three more tries within 20 minutes to be leading 56 points to 3. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, St Michaels finally got some quality go-forward ball that had Providence scrambling. Scrum half, Brian Meloche feed Andy Bourque at fly half who passed a well placed ball out in front of Matt Scheffler. Running with pace onto the ball, Matt saw an opening and with a fend and plenty of determination broke a couple of tackles to run in for a good try. Steve Thompson converted the try. St. Michaels were more competitive in the later stages of the game and following a period of pressure on Providence, Andy Bourque contributed the last points of the game by knocking over a drop goal from a handy position.

Although St. Michael’s A’s have made some progress this year, the one critical area we have not been able to address is tackling. We missed 33 tackles in the first half alone. That is more than what we should miss in a whole season, let alone 40 minutes of rugby.

Team: Davis Peck, Jose Ramos, Keith Montford, James Hughes, Chris Jacob, Sam Rooney, Kevin Cote, Matt Foley, Brian Meloche, Andy Bourque, Steve Thompson, Jack Rooney, Matt Scheffler, Zach Benuck, Jordan Recine

Reserves: Nick Kyratzis, Joseph Cassady, Mike Brown, Nick Kyratzis, Nate Quealy, Cameron Gonzalez, Filip Deptula

The previously undefeated Killer B's unfortunately took their first loss at the hands of a solid Providence team. It was a hard fought game with some standout play from Bobby Poland among others.

St. Michael's B-Team suffers their first loss of the season

The B’s started this game well and were leading at half time by 13 points to 7, but were totally shut out in the second half by a Providence team that scored 3 more tries. This was the first loss of the season for the B’s and one that I expect them to bounce back from.

The B’s points came from two penalties kicked by Zach Perreault from around 35 meters out and a try by Cameron Gonzalez. The try was a good one and started when Bobby Poland picked up a loose pass around 40 meters out from the Providence try line. With the open side of the field covered and the opposition defense descending on him, Bobby changed direction and ran to the blind side. He made good progress, but with his way blocked, put in a well judged kick that stretched the defense and kept the movement going. Cameron, who chased the kick from Bobby, beat the defense to the ball and raced the last 15 meters in to score a very good try. Bobbie converted the try. Unfortunately that was the last points were scored.

Team: Mike Brown, Kevin Hanlon, Joseph Cassady, Nick Kyratzis, Dennis Sullivan, Daykwon Hughes, Chris Dustin , Michael Ricci, Nate Quealy, Bobby Poland, Andrew Kenney, Fillip Deptula, Cameron Gonzalez, Corey Stewart, Tyler Pearl, Zachery Perreault, Will Kosch
