10/8/11 Colchester, VT - WE WIN!
St. Michael’s A’s scored their first competition win of the season with a good performance on a warm sunny day in Colchester, VT. Although far from perfect, the A’s did enough to secure this one.
Steve Thompson's boot was a key part of St. Mike's success in their victory over St. Anselm in Week 3.
St. Anselm scored first following some deceptive work from a backline that looked dangerous on most occasions when they got the ball. The try was unconverted. The next points came from a 30-meter penalty kick by Steve Thompson to get St. Michael’s on the scoreboard. At a crucial point 3 minutes prior to half time, St. Michael’s elected to tap and run a penalty rather than kick for goal when inside St. Anselm’s 22 meter line. The ball was moved wide and Jack Rooney found a hole and went over for our first try of the day. Steve Thompson kicked the conversion and at half time St. Michael’s were up 10 points to 5.
St. Michael’s started better in the second half and following a sustained period inside the opposition 22, was awarded a penalty. A carbon copy of our first try, the ball was moved across the backline to Zach Perreault out on the wing to score. Kicking at 100%, Steve nailed a great kick from near the touch line. St. Michael’s continued to put the opposition under pressure and penalties were coming our way. The try of the match came 25 minutes into the second half. Andy Bourque receiving the ball 10 meters inside the opposition half executed a well placed kick out wide and behind the St. Anselm’s winger. The ball bounced kindly for a charging Zach Benuck to pluck the ball and race in for the try. Steve converted the try and St. Michael’s had a handy 24 to 10 lead with around 15 minutes to play. All thoughts of a stress free final 15 minutes were dashed when following a strong break by the St. Anselm team down the far side, Steve Thompson showed pace and determination to put in a desperate try saving tackle that was ruled dangerous by the ref. Having warned both teams for repeated high tackling, the ref had no choice but to award a penalty try and send Steve to the sin bin for ten minutes. St. Anselm scored a try and the momentum had shifted. However, as with their previous shots at goal, the conversion attempt was missed. The score was now 24 to 15 with 10 minutes remaining. St Michael’s hung on well and Steve returned to kick one more penalty and to take his tally to 12 points with a 100 % kicking record. This proved decisive as both teams finished with 3 tries apiece.
Overall a well taken must win result and the guys should be proud. Specifically, the scrum was solid, rucking was improved, but still with work to do. St. Michael’s bucked the trend of previous weeks and gave away few penalties this week, which was very pleasing to see. The biggest weakness was our defense and tackling with 10 missed tackles in the first half alone. In particular, our backline experienced a lot of trouble defending the opposition when they ran the ball wide.
Team: Davis Peck, Jose Ramos, Keith Montford, Mike Welch, Jimbo Hughes, Sam Rooney, Kevin Cote, Matt Foley, Brian Meloche, Andy Bourque, Steve Thompson, Jack Rooney, Cameron Gonzalez, Zach Benuck, Jordan Recine
Reserves: Zach Perreault, Nick Kyratzis, Chris Dustin, Chris Jacob, Mike Brown, Nate Quealy, Tyler Pearl, Bobby Poland
Do my eyes deceive me? Some of our St. Michael's players graciously took up the slack for the St. Anselm B-Team that was short a few bodies for Saturday's contest. The game was ultimately deemed a forfeit, but the St. Michael's B-Team continued their winning ways in a 31-8 defeat of the modified St. Anselm side.
St. Anselm forfeited this game as they fronted with only a handful of players. The game did proceed but was reduced to 12 aside and 20 minute half’s with several of our team playing for St. Anselm.
Despite, the confusion, it proved to be an entertaining and open game with St Michael’s scoring 6 tries in the space of 40 minutes. The two tries that were scored by St. Anselm were scored by St. Michael’s players (Filip Deptula and Zach Perreault).
Filip got the first try after 5 minutes with a strong run down the far touchline. After 10 minutes St. Michael’s replied with a fine try to Kevin Hanlon, who playing in the backs for the first time, ran 40 meters to score. From the kick off following the try, St. Michael’s received the ball 10 meters inside their half of the field, the ball was spun wide to Cameron who showed good pace to beat two men on the outside and run in for a try. The try was converted by Tyler Pearl and the B’s were up 12 points to 5.
In the second half Kevin Hanlon moved into the forwards and Kevin Cote came out to the backs. St. Anselm scored first through a good try to Zach. Then from a penalty to the B’s around 30 meters out from the opposition line, the ball was spun wide and with Kevin Cote running a great line caught the ball at pace and went in for the try. Tyler converted the try and the score was 19 to 8.
The B’s were really starting to look good. They were dominating the scrum and the forwards were providing the backs with some good quality go-forward ball that they could run onto. Following a period of pressure inside the opposition 22, Bobby Poland attempted a drop goal that although missed, was not fielded by the opposition. Our new prop Joe Cassady, in his first game ever, chased the kick and scored when the opposition defense went to sleep. Not happy with just one try in his first game, Joe scored again soon after. He picked up a loose ball 10 meters out from the line and charged through 2 or 3 defenders for the try. Those try’s capped off a great first up game for Joe who was always making good yards with ball in hand and defended well. Daykwon Hughes also had a strong game in the forwards and is a freshman that looks to be growing in confidence with each game. Despite witnessing some really nice tries, the best was saved to last with. From a scrum around the half way line, the ball was moved wide across the backline, doubling around in support, Kevin Cote received the ball out wide and with an overlap and plenty of gas in his tank scorched any remaining defense with a 40 meters dash to score his second try of the game.
The Killer B’s are 3 for 3 and looking good.
