10/1/11 Waltham, MA - Week two saw St. Mikes come up against a tougher team than last week. Bentley was a well-drilled team that beat us to the breakdown and outplayed us in scrums and line-outs. For the second week in a row the St. Michael’s A’s gave away too many penalties (14) and slipped off too many tackles. This combined with our difficulty obtaining scrum ball meant that we were starved of possession for long periods in the game. Although an improvement on last weeks 19, the high number of penalties and number of missed tackles are problems that need to improve.
This match proved to be one that St. Michael's would like to put behind them.
Despite a heavy defeat, the team kept battling to the end, picking up their only try on the stroke of full time. In the forwards, Matt Foley and Jimbo Hughes stood out with some good positional play and tackling. Although the backs did not get many opportunities with the ball in hand, Brian Meloche tackled hard until he came off in the second half with a shoulder injury. The try scored by St. Michael’s came about from a period of sustained pressure at the opposition’s end of the field. The try out wide was well taken by Jack Rooney who received a slick pass from Cameron Gonzalez on his inside.
Team: Davis Peck, Jose Ramos, Keith Montford, Chris Jacobs, Jimbo Hughes, Sam Rooney, Kevin Cote, Matt Foley, Brian Meloche, Andy Bourque, Steve Thompson, Jack Rooney, Cameron Gonzalez, Zach Benuck, Jordan Recine
Reserves: Nick Kyratzis, Chris Dustin, Mike Welch, Big Mike Brown, Richie Fennelly, Tyler Pearl, Bobby Poland
Another strong effort from the Killer B's in a 21-5 victory over Bentley's B team.
Two wins from two games and the killer B’s are on a roll. Big Mike picked up his first try of the year following a strong run to the try line. Bentley got an intercept try latter in the half to keep the game close going into the break. In the second half Bentley came out strong and St. Michaels showed a lot of resolve to keep them from scoring when they were hammering at the line. The game swung St. Michael’s way when we saw two very good tries scored that swept the length of the field. Playing in just his third game and his second of the day, Cameron Gonzalez showed good pace when he broke from his own 22 to run 40 meters before feeding Tyler Pearl on his outside who raced the final 20 meters to the try line. It wasn’t long after that we saw Jordan Recine, who came on in the second half after also playing a full game for the A’s score a great try. Receiving the ball about 30 meters out from his own line and just about the whole of the opposition team in front of him, Jordan took off on a trademark Jordan run that showed pace, balance and determination to dot down under the posts. All tries were converted and B’s are now starting to show a degree of confidence building in the team.
Team: Big Mike Brown, Pat O’Connell, Kevin Hanlon, Nick Kyratzis, Mike Ricci, Daykwon Hughes, Chris Sheehy, Chris Dustin, Richie Fennelly, Bobby Poland, Zachary Perreault, Steve Thompson, Nate Quealy, Cameron Gonzalez, Corey Stewart, Tyler Pearl. Reserves: Jordan Recine, Davis Peck, Keith Montford, Jose Ramos.
