9/24/11 Colchester, VT - After putting some solid performances together in the three preseason games, St. Michael’s started the 2011 Fall season looking to put a very difficult 2010 season behind them. This was a game where St. Michael’s were very competitive throughout and had opportunities to win. The lead changed several times during a fairly tense first up game.
This match would prove to be a tight affair all the way through.
The St. Michael’s scrum was generally solid and had the upper hand on Merrimack for most of the game. Our lineout work was not as consistent though, losing possession on three occasions from our own throw in. The day was overcast and had rained in the morning leaving the ball slippery. St. Michael’s as well as Merrimack had difficulty handling the ball, particularly in the first half where a lot of knock-on’s occurred. The most telling statistic however, was the number of times St. Michael’s were penalized. A very high 19 penalties were awarded by the referee in this game, 13 of which were against St Michael’s. A crucial moment came in towards the end of the game. St Michael’s were leading by 3 points with 15 minutes to play. They were camped in their own end of the field and were having difficulty getting out of the danger zone. Under pressure, they gave away a penalty-try and had a player sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Down by 2 points with just 14 players turned out to be too big a task to come back from.
St. Michaels does have some very exciting players to watch and we saw two very well taken tries. Jordan Recine scored the first try at fullback, while the second went to Zach Benuck on the wing. Steve Thompson was striking the ball well today and converted both tries and also kicked a penalty goal. To see a dropped goal in a game is fairly rare, to see a forward kick one is almost unheard off. Matt Foley kicked a well struck dropped goal during the second half of the game.
Team: Davis Peck, Jose Ramos, Keith Montford, Chris Jacob, Jim Hughes, Sam Rooney, Kevin Cote, Matt Foley, Brian Meloche, Andy Bourque, Steve Thompson, Jack Rooney, Matt Scheffler, Zach Benuck, Jordan Recine.
Reserves: Nick Kyratzis, Chris Dustin, Mike Welch, Mike Brown, Ritchie Fennelly, Tyler Pearl, Bobby Poland
What a way to start out the 2011 campaign... with total teamwork.
The killer B’s got off to a good start and kept the momentum going for most of the game. They never looked in doubt of notching up their first win of the season. The B’s had the edge on Merrimack for most of the game and scored 6 good tries, while letting in two tries to the opposition. Chris Dustin got the first try with a storming run to the line, Fillip Deptula running hard found a gap and touched down for the second, Cameron Gonzalez got the third, Davis Peck ranging out in the backs got the 4th, Cameron Gonzalez showed his pace beating several defenders on the outside to get his second try of the day and Zach Perreault scored a very good try running half the length of the field and bumping off a couple of tackles in the process. What was extra special about this game was seeing several new players experience their first game of rugby. It’s a lot to learn and they did very well. In fact three of the try scorers were playing their first game (Fillip Deptula, Cameron Gonzalez & Zach Perreault). Tyler Pearl had some difficult conversions to attempt, but landed two of them.
