I took on the men’s coaching position is 2004 and was named the Director of Rugby at the same time. In 2003, the team was 0-6; in 2004 we were 6-4, making it to the first round of the playoffs. We have made it to the playoffs each year since, and have won the Plate championship 2 of those years. I began playing rugby in high school (in 1982!). I played football in college, and played rugby after graduating here and there in Colorado, Los Angeles, Toronto and Oshkosh, WI. In Toronto and Wisconsin I become more interested in the fundamentals of the game. I started refereeing and tried to do some coaching. I moved to Burlington in 2003, played for 3 years with BRFC, but decided that with three young kids and a career, it was time to retire from playing and move into coaching. When I am not coaching, I am teaching philosophy at UVM, goofing off with my kids, or renovating my house. I am a USA Rugby accredited coach and referee and continue to learn about the game through various clinics and workshops – including the most recent Queensland Reds Clinic held in 2009 and hosted by Saint Michael’s College.
I grew up in rugby mad New Zealand where like most boys growing up in that country, I started playing rugby at the age of 7. We played the game before school, after school and at every break or recess we had. As kids we played Saturday mornings in bare feet on frost covered fields and loved it. I played every year until I was 24 and then more sporadically after that. I played all of my rugby in the backs, mostly at the fullback position and some games at flyhalf or wing. In 2010 I had my first experience coaching and even though we had a very difficult year in terms of results and I was learning how to be a coach, I enjoyed the experience. I enjoyed working with the boys and the coaching staff and I enjoyed being back connected with a game that was such a big part of my life for so long.

Coach Charles Cisco began playing in Germany in 1992. Playing on a new military team, Coach started his career at wing. During his first three seasons, Coach played all 15 positions on the field. In his third season, he was injured and worked with his coach to learn more of the game and the intricate details on the game. In 1995, Coach was the starting hooker for the combined services team in Germany. After leaving Germany in 1996, he moved to New Mexico and coached a combined forces team. In their second year, the Holloman Desert Dogs won division 2. After leaving New Mexico, with a stop over in Korea, Coach played in Alabama. After leaving the Army, Coach came to Vermont in 2000 and accepted the position of Womens coach in the spring of 2001.
I grew up playing rugby in the back yard with my brother in Australia. I played rugby league when I was in the Australian Airforce and then turned to rugby union about 16 years ago. I love everything about the game but I am especially passionate about trying to read the game and trying to out think the opposition. I have played every position in the backline (some better than others) at some point during my time. I am still an active player with the Burlington mens team and I am eager to pass on my love for the game to my players.
